How on earth do I teach about intimacy?
Thank heavens I am down to just one child at home, and it is our only son. While I was planning a family night lesson about this topic I wanted to make sure that I had a forum for open dialogue, but also some facts about intimacy and why we need to set personal boundaries. So many teens think that they know it all, and can just 'figure it out' at the last second if it comes up. Not true. It is a fact that if we have some pre-set guidelines that we want to follow or at the very least that we are expected to follow that it gives us much better confidence in intimate situations.
LDS.org A Parent's Guide has some great chapters for each age group. In chapter 5 "Teaching Adolescents: Twelve to Eighteen Years", it reminds us that teenage years can be very confusing as there are many changes physically as well as emotionally. We need to keep the lines of communication open for our kids and reassure them that there are a lot of great wholesome activities that we can plan for them to do that will keep them happy and socially connected. It is also a great time to keep them spiritually fed. Seminary is such a great class for my son. It helps him to have an hour per day to just be with others who are his age and trying.
Keep communication open!!
